TAKI’s staff contributed to the discovery of highly unexplored bacterial communities in sodic soils

Researchers of the Department of Soil Biology together with the colleagues of the Department of Microbiology of the Eötvös Loránd University, studied the effect of soil salinity and pH on the microbial assemblages metabolic activity pattern and taxonomic composition of saline-sodic soil in the Solonchak-Solonetz meadow of Apajpuszta (Kiskunsag NP, Hungary), in the soil of four characteristic plant associations during an extremely dry (June) and an extreme wet (September) period. Both soil bacterial diversity and metabolic activity patterns varied primarily to the sodic soil alkali vegetation types representing an alkalinity-salinity gradient. The type of alkali vegetation caused greater shifts in both the diversity and activity of sodic soil microbial communities than the extreme aridity and moisture.
