The joint research of the Department of Soil Mapping and Environmental Informatics, and the Department of Soil Chemistry and Turnover "Influence of the Shortening of the Winter Fertilization Prohibition Period in Hungary Assessed by Spatial Crop Simulation Analysis" has been published in journal Sustainibility (IF: 2,592, Q2).

Our aim in the study was to compile a GIS dataset based on compulsory data acquisition of farmers according to the Nitrates Directive, which can provide input data for the 4M simulation model. 4M process-based model is used for estimating yield, crop N uptake, nutrient balances and amount of NO3-N leached under the root zone in each blocks (which parcel are vulnerable by nitrate leaching), so values of these variables could be spatially visualized. Beside the currently valid fertilization prohibition period model results for two shortened prohibition period were simulated. The potential pollution effect of nitrate leaching on water quality taking into account of reduced prohibition period was evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different timing of fertilization on nitrate leaching at country scale. Evaluating the results of 4M simulation model, we proposed the prohibition period could be shortened by 1 month without increasing risk of N leaching.
