Lecture Day at the MTA on the occasion of the Hungarian Science Festival organized by MTA ATK TAKI

MTA ATK TAKI organized a lecture day entitled "Soil and Environment" on the occasion of the Hungarian Science Festival, which took place on 28 November 2018 in the reading room of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
The lectures highlighted the versatile functions of the soil, the importance of their preservation.

In her presentation entitled “Diagnostic Approach to Soil Characterization”, Erika Michéli, head of department at Szent István University, gave an overview of the history of soil classification from ancient times to the present, as well as the renewed Hungarian soil classification system.

László Pásztor, head of department at MTA ATK TAKI, presented the spatial aspects of the relationship between soil and environment.

The other three lectures (Zsófia Bakacsi, head of department at MTA ATK TAKI: "The role of soil in water management"; Hajnalka Breuer, assistant professor in the Department of Meteorology at ELTE TTK "The role of soils in meteorological processes"; Tibor Szili-Kovács, head of department of MTA ATK TAKI "Soil Life and Soil Functions") reflected the key role of soils in the survival of the hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.

Nándor Fodor, head of department at MTA ATK Agricultural Institute, introduced the audience to the possibilities of bio-geo-chemical modelling of agricultural ecology. Nikolett Uzinger, head of department at MTA ATK TAKI explained the role of waste and contaminants entering the soil. Gábor Illés, Deputy Director of Research at the NAIK Forestry Research Institute, presented his research on estimating the timber yield class of forest areas using digital soil maps.
