At the Earth Festival held at the Budapest Zoo, the MTA ATK Institute of Soil Sciences and the Hungarian Soil Science Society were represented together in 2019, in accordance with the traditions of previous years.
Our goal is to highlight the importance of soils in the International Decade for Soils (2015-2024), according to which we not only stand on the soil, but also live on it. We welcomed the invitation of the Budapest Zoo, which on 27 and 28 April 2019 held interactive workshops on soils in a theoretical and practical approach, spiced with playful tasks. Despite the cool, windy weather, enthusiastic, interested children, young people and older people were able to learn about the physical and chemical properties and biological characteristics of the soils. Visitors could take home small gifts, a creative booklet, a badge, a fridge magnet, plants to plant, which would also remind them at home of the importance of soils.
